I won't be putting the tremola arm on my new Strat. Do you guys usually leave the bridge floating or do you tighten the two screws on the back. I have read somewhere also that some people use more springs. What is the consensus with this group? Sometimes I notice it is easy to rest your had on the bridge and it bends the notes out of tune a little.

Tighten the screws.
It's simple and effective.
I don't use a trem on my california strat and
it stays in tune now.

I tighten the screws and add 1 spring and set it up with the trem plate flat against the body. My reasoning is threefold:
1. Stays in tune way better and returns to the correct position after trem use if used.
2. Holds the block against the wood maybe offering a better tone.
3. As you say, when you rest your hand on the bridge (which I do often for comfort and right hand muting), it won't cause the bridge to flutter.

You can't raise the pitch with the trem bar when it's set up this way but I figure if that's something I need to do I'll get a floyd-rose guitar.

I solved the trouble of bridge "flutter" when resting your palm on the bridge with a brick of Philidelphia Cream Cheese!

Just stuff the unwrapped brick between the bridge block and the guitar body, and VOILA!

The tremolo still works for heavy dives, but stays put when normal palm mute pressure is applied to the bridge!

I tried the other popular methods.. Meatloaf, fruitcake, jello, but found that a brick of good ole Philidelphia Cream Cheese works the best.. and unlike grandmas meatloaf, or a block of wood (both usually have the same consitancy) the cream cheese method has no adverse effect on the tone of the guitar.

The best way is to tighten the two screws on the back. Even expert musicians that's what they usually did because it's more easy and convenient. What do you think are the techniques to avoid bridge trouble?

I think to have some extra spring may cause something abnormal !
